PBL Week 2 – December 2021
Our final week before Christmas saw Logic students engage in their 2nd PBL week of the year. In PBL Week, we give students the opportunity to be off timetable and participate in a range of projects, activities and trips. The main aim is to develop their ‘Professional Competencies’, the key skills we believe they will need for their future but we also want students to have fun and develop their knowledge of the world in which we live. At Christmas, we also give students the chance to undertake a number of fun trips, to develop their cultural capital.
Christmas Trips
Christmas Markets
Students and staff travelled into Southbank to explore the Christmas Markets – taking a walking tour of Southbank, Trafalgar Square and Covent Gardens. We then went to the Tate Museum in order to explore the great variety of exhibitions. After an obligatory hot chocolate and some Christmas shopping, we made our way home to Feltham.
Top Golf
A number of students had the opportunity to visit Top Golf in Addlestone for the morning, a ‘target’ golf range where students pit themselves against each other and the computer to score points. It was a really fun morning, with some excellent and some ‘not so good’ golf on show from students and staff.
Zoo
Students and staff took a trip to London Zoo and got the chance to explore the amazing variety in the animal kingdom. Students saw animals from across the world in recreations of their natural biomes. Particular highlights involved the walk through enclosures which allowed attendees to get up close and personal to a number of free-roaming animals including a sloth, lemurs, monkeys and spiders!
Museums
Students had a busy day of culture at the Natural History Museum and The Science Museum in South Kensington. The students explored different exhibitions at the museums and were able to have a go at some interactive aspects, including a flight simulator. The day ended with a look around the gift shop, where some pupils bought Christmas presents for family members.
Paintball
We travelled to Delta Force in Surrey with a large group of students across all year groups and took part in a mud filled day of Paintballing. We all had a great time and as well as a few bruises there were a lot of laughs and strong team building activities.
Escape Room
4 groups of students from across the year groups battled their way through cryptic challenges to fight their way out of 2 escape rooms in under an hour! Thanks to their great teamwork and ingenious brains, all teams got out successfully, with one team gaining the full treasure bounty!
Year 10
My Bank
Year 10s and 11s were given an exciting opportunity to delve into their personal finances and find out how to better manage their money. MyBank facilitated as students used case studies to understand how tax, national insurance and pensions affect income; this really helped our students to think about how different incomes are managed. Throughout the morning, students were given opportunities to speak to the experts at MyBank in order to demystify the world of personal finance and to pick up some helpful tips!
Christmas Carol
After having studied A Christmas Carol throughout the autumn term, year 10 participated in a staging and set design day for PBL. They were given the brief that they were a production team, and were tasked with adapting the novella and creating a play. The day kicked off with some research into previous productions and the way in which a theatre runs. From there, they wrote scripts based on some extracts, focusing on stage directions and dialogue.
The second half of the day became incredibly crafty as Year 10 let their creativity take hold. They looked at key characters and created costumes, using extracts and information about Victorian England. The pupils then created scale models of sets with lots of glitter, lollypop sticks and pipe cleaners!
To end the day, all of the creations were gathered and we shared what we had achieved in an exhibition.
Year 11
IDEA Award
Year 11 continued to work towards their Bronze and Silver Idea Award. By individually navigating through the maze of tasks available many have tackled new challenges and concepts getting a border understanding of the IT world. Of particular note 2 Students have now achieved their Silver award and more are to follow!
Extremism
On Tuesday, Year 11 students explored ‘Extremism’ and ‘Extremist Groups’ through History. They spent the first session discussing and debating what the two definitions ‘extremism’ and terroism’ really meant. They were then tasked with researching different events in History (linked to their GCSE and A-LEVEL) in order to come up with an argument, ready to debate! The Year 11 students were debating the following question ‘Extremism is more prevalent in modern society than ever before’ and the arguments they created were fantastic. They really rose to the challenge which really developed their thinking on the notion of extremism, what causes extremism and how it can be prevented.
Transition
With students starting to look at their post 16 options, we delivered a 2nd session to support student choices. Students looked at applications for different options including Logic, other schools and colleges and apprenticeships; completed a CV; while also undertaking a 1 to 1 interview with a member of SLT to discuss their personal options.
Year 12 Projects
Debate
As part of our school focus on developing oracy skills, Year 12 took part in a debate for the day. Students were introduced to the structure of Mace debating, as well as key terms and ways of writing speeches. Then, we introduced the motions of ‘This house believes that animals have the same rights as humans’. After fateful planning and research, students were assigned teams for the final debates. We had some heated and thoughtful arguments around animal testing, animal abuse, human intellect and much more!
Rebranding
The Year 12s spent the day integrating their Games Design, Digital Publishing, IT and Business (Marketing)knowledge together. They were given a project (ULEZ), and they needed to rebrand the current marketing campaign whilst developing their inter-departmental collaboration. Each student had a specific task to complete, and the project manager needed to ensure that all departments were positively collaborating and working together successfully. The Y12s developed their cultural capital, by learning about beyond Feltham, and had the opportunity to pitch their ideas to their peers to grow their public speaking.
International Trading Game
The Yr12 students spent the day in teams, each of which acted as a separate ‘country’ without any information about what to do. They had to discover for themselves what was going on with the only information that was given was the objective: To make the most amount of money possible. Countries compete against each other to ‘manufacture’ paper shapes (circles, triangles, rectangles, etc.) and sell them to an international commodity market trader at posted prices, which vary with supply and demand. Students learnt a range of intra and interconnected links to a variety of subjects and cultural capital reference points. At Logic, we believe that shaping our students to have a broader understanding of the world is paramount to making a well rounded individual, readying them to make a swift transition into the next stage of their life.
Feltham Futures
The Y12s split into groups and spent the morning as “urban planners” coming up with ways to regenerate Feltham and make it an even better place for future generations. They had to problem solve and consider things such as budgets, environmental factors, land use and government policies in order to come up with new facilities in the area. Students did a fantastic and thorough job of planning and came up with brilliant new ideas such as a mental health centre for new people, turning the duck pond into a family friendly park with new facilities and new entertainment venues for young people and families.
They worked collaboratively to achieve their goal and developed confidence and oracy by presenting to staff at the end of the project.
Logic Computing
Students were invited to create and design a showcase event which would promote Logics specialisms across the local community and across other schools. Ideas had to be well planned and all team members were expected to exemplify the logic professional competencies throughout the day. Students produced detailed plans that would enthuse others to take part and learn new skills, compete against other schools within innovative competitions and provided the structure in a carefully orchestrated way for the Logic specialisms to create intrigue in their planned activity. The level of focus and professionalism exhibited by the students was outstanding.
